Welsh surgeries forced to close pharmacies

Dispensing surgeries are being forced to close because of a legal loophole in Wales. Conservatives are attacking the Welsh Assembly Government for not protecting such practices that are mainly in rural areas.

This attack has come on after two South Wales surgeries were forced to stop dispensing to their patients directly.

Wales is still governed under the 1992 regulation that requires a dispensing surgery to stop dispensing should a pharmacy apply to open within 1.6km of their surgery. England however had the rules amended in 2005, allowing them to continue dispensing in a area with less than 2,750 patients.
