NHS spend millions on unused drugs

As much as £1 worth of every £20 spent on prescription drugs is never used by patients, according to the NHS.

As hundreds of millions of pounds worth of unused drugs are wasted, a scottish GP called for a new recycling scheme. Some drugs are binned by patients and others are returned to pharmacists and incinerated, all cost the NHS.

The idea from Dr. Douglas of Fort William, is to offer unopened medicines to patients whop couldn't afford them otherwise.

Recently Scotland's biggest health boards have held press conferences to highlight the waste of unused medicines, the biggest of which being NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde wasting approximatly £24million every year on unused drugs. No one knows exactly how much is wasted everyyear but the bill for the whole of the UK is estimated at £100 million.
